This is part of a series exploring Luke’s Gospel for the Advent season. One chapter a day for the first 24 days of December. (We'll see how we go!) I hope you enjoy :)

In Chapter 2 of Luke’s Gospel, we learn of where Christ was born and when. This really happened. He has a place in history. When Jesus became human (which is partly what Christmas is all about), He not only took on flesh (John 1), but entered into a specific part of time and space also.
So too for us: we are born into specific times and places. No-one else has the same unique background and opportunities as you.
For some, that might be a sad, upsetting thing. Others are grateful.
All of us have this day in front of us, wherever we are, to take as a new opportunity. The Lord’s mercies are new every morning (Lamentations 2:22-23). Sometimes whatever is in our power to do is what we are supposed to do - with whatever we have (Ecclesiastes 9:10).
When the shepherds were told that today a Saviour had been born to them in Bethlehem, they went and then told others (Luke 2:8-20). What are we going to do today, where we are?
(For me, I am writing this in bed, ill. I can’t do very much physically - but I hope I have been able to write this short piece, on my phone, and that it encourages you a little. May God bless you.)
