Advent - Luke Chapter 6

This is part of a series exploring Luke’s Gospel for the Advent season. One chapter a day for the first 24 days of December. (We’ll see how we go!) I hope you enjoy :)

- Jeff

Reading the Lord’s words from Luke 6:20 onwards, there is almost no point on which I feel proud of my achievements. Maybe that’s a good thing. Perhaps these verses show how far short we fall of divine expectations.

The challenge to own Him as Lord and do what He says rings through time and cuts us to the quick (Luke 6:46-49). If we say we have no sin we deceive ourselves (1 John 1:8), but we also believe that when we see Him, we will be like Him (1 John 3:2). How can this be?

Grace. Undeserved, unattainable (that is, not be attained, but granted), grace.

The process of becoming like Jesus may be more visible in some than in others. Often people notice His presence in our lives and actions more  than we do ourselves. Some love and relish this, for others it is repulsive (2 Corinthians 2:16).

For those of us who follow Jesus, this life means total commitment. Humility, yes, but also a decision to hear and obey. May we all receive the help we need to make good on that decision, each day.
